Our first farm event of the season! The Glorious Garlic Harvest is scheduled for Saturday, July 18th – we will have more detailed info in upcoming newsletters. We get to spend time with our CSA Farmily, build community, share in the work, food, and refreshments. Farm tour after the harvest
Tasks accomplished this week:
We were able to get the winter squash planted: butternut, delicata, and acorn. This is planted on landscape fabric since they are vining plants and we are unable to cultivate them. This also helps keep the fruit off of the bare soil. We also got our sweet corn plantings in. Transplant corn??? Yes, we have been transplanting corn for several years now. Why? Our organic corn seed is not treated with a fungicide. Therefore, with all of the rain we have had, it is likely that it would rot in the field and not have a very productive germination. This way we know that we have a plant every 12″ and this increases our odds of having sweet corn for all of you. We expect our sweet corn to be ready at the end of August to early September.

Weather
We have had over 4″ of rain this month. One inch of that was in the last 3 days. We are 1.5″ over normal for this month so far. These heavy rains make it a challenge to get plants in the field. We are doing our best and working with what we can. Last Thursday we had a severe storm in the morning. We didn’t realize how serious until later. Joe and I were preparing for me to leave for delivery when we received a tornado warning on his phone alerting us to seek shelter in a lower level. Not us – we ran around closing all of the hightunnels and hoop houses to prepare for soaking rain and wind. Needless to say, we got soaked and our sneakers will be very stinky for weeks. Well, it turns out that we had a tornado in our neighborhood. Luckily, our farm was undamaged from the high winds. Our neighbors at Apollo’s Praise vineyard were not as lucky.

Thank you from your farmers, Joely & Joe!
