Farm Update:

What a month! Since our last update we have been working non-stop. May is a month where everything needs to be done yesterday. The daily task list must get rearranged due to weather and soil conditions. We had to prepare the plots for planting in between rainstorms. The lush rye cover crop had to be incorporated into the soil and allowed to break down a bit before we can plant into it. We cover crop to keep the soil covered over the winter and it gets worked into the soil for organic matter to help feed the soil microbes and add nutrients. We must wait 2 weeks for that process to happen before planting. The rainy spring did create a challenge for us.

Once seeds or transplants are put out into the field, we must try to protect them from pests and deer damage. We cover several crops with row covers. These large white sheets help to keep off pests and “hide” them from the munching deer. Even with the covers the flea beetles still get under through holes the deer make when walking across. When temperatures get hot the pests arrive. We did have several hot days already.

Remember in these first few weeks the shares are light. Your bounty is coming…. we are all excited for the abundance. Please be patient.
