May – CSA News

May – CSA News
Wow! What a month. Yes, we know it is May 31st. We have been so busy this month that we waited until the last day to update our CSA news. Sorry about that, but you will be grateful for your veggies.

We had a full spectrum of weather in May. Can you believe that it snowed just 3 weeks ago? Then we had tornado warnings, downpours, high temps in the ’80s and today is down right chilly. We haven’t let it stop us from our fieldwork. The seed starting, repotting, and transplanting has been in full swing here this month. It is always a mad dash to get everything in the ground in a short span of time all while working with the weather conditions.

We planted the bell peppers and heirloom tomatoes in our cold-frame hoophouses. The field transplanting this month has been lettuce heads, swiss chard, celery, celeriac, onions, scallions, cabbage, bok choy, beets, bell peppers, mini-sweet peppers, tomatoes (heirloom, slicing, grape, cherry, and roma), summer squash (zucchini, yellow, kusa, Ronde de nice), and sweet potato. Soon we hope to complete transplanting of eggplant, cucumbers, winter squash (butternut and delicata), Asian greens, kale, green cabbage, basil and flowers. Direct seeding in the field this month was baby lettuce mix, radish, and green beans.

CSA Shares begin the week of June 9th

CSA members will receive emails next week with details that pertain to their individual delivery location. Please watch your inbox. This is also a great time for us to make sure everyone is set with proper emails and locations. You will receive a weekly email late morning on Tuesdays to notify you that the Weekly CSA Update is on the website as well and any other important news. We are all excited to get the season started and have bountiful expectations for the season.

Farm Project – We completed an important project on the farm this past month. This has been on our wish list for many years. We built a solid roof over our wash area that extends from our packing house. For many years we have used the 10×20 garage-type canopies side by side. This was always a struggle in the wind and rain. Thrilled to be under a proper shelter this season and it is a great addition for when we host events on the farm. We are proud to have supported many local businesses in this project. Your CSA membership has helped this happen. Supporting Local!

We would also like to give a special shout out to our friend Dan. We could not have built it without his work, planning, and expertise. He does these projects for “fun” but he is really a craftsman woodworker. He enjoys crafting custom furniture and cabinets. Do you have a project in mind? Let us know and we can put you in touch with Dan. Rich, special thanks to you also for helping with the building. In addition, Rich and Dan are semi-pro dart team members along with Joe at Seneca Lake Brewing. You can find them most Saturday nights practicing at Seneca Lake Brewing. Come play with us – once they reopen of course. Thanks so much!

This is our favorite custom blend. Although we have never had one we don’t like!

Did you Know? Did you know that you can have Seneca Sunrise Coffee delivered with your CSA share? Yes, I know,! Isn’t that amazing? If you are not familiar with their small-batch roasted coffee, then you don’t know what you are missing. If you desire organic coffee beans that are roasted in small batches to perfection, look no further. We couldn’t get all of our farmwork done without that morning cup (and afternoon). This is by far the best coffee we have ever tasted. We order the 5# bag! There are many options of single-origin, house, and custom blends. Well, all you need to do is an order by phone or email and let them know that you are an Ever Green Farm CSA member. Please CC us on the email so that we also know what you ordered. If the coffee you desire is in stock, we will pick it up and deliver it to your CSA location the following week. Your payment is due by check made out to Seneca Sunrise Coffee. No shipping charges or extra trips. Support Local! You can visit the website for more information. https://www.senecasunrisecoffee.com/
