April – CSA News
All is well on the farm! We are on schedule and working hard to get some fresh local organic veggies to you in June. Our seedling hoop-house is filling up rapidly with little plants. We are starting new seeds and repotting daily. We were able to take advantage of the sunshine and get some direct seeding done in the field. This is always a challenge with our rainy weather patterns in the spring. Hopefully, the snow showers are over!

In the field, we have planted snow peas, snap peas, potatoes, lettuce mix, arugula, mustard greens, baby bok choy, and hakurei salad turnips. The garlic is growing nicely and so is the rhubarb. When the soil dries a bit we will be able to get back into the field and transplant lettuce heads, swiss chard, celery, celeriac, parsley, onions, scallions, cabbage, bok choy, Asian greens, and beets. These plants are cold-hardy and always go out first. In the next few weeks, we will plant our peppers and heirloom tomatoes into our cold frame hoop houses.

Did you know– We start all of our transplants ourselves. We purchase certified organic seed and potting mix. Our seeds are purchased from High Mowing Organic Seeds or Johnny’s Seeds and our potting mix is made by McEnroe Organic Farm – right in NY. We start the first seeds in early March and don’t stop until after the fall crops are transplanted in July. We are limited on space so we must start seeds in trays and then repot as they grow. Using this cycle we are able to germinate larger quantities of seeds and varieties in a staggered fashion. The only transplants that we purchase are seed potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Here are some pictures from around the farm this month.

Farm Events
We have our annual farm events scheduled. We will decide at a later date if they will go on depending on how the current distancing requirements evolve. These events are held outside for CSA members and their families.
SAVE THE DATE:
Saturday, June 27th – Celebrate the Season – Salads and Slaws- 12-3
Saturday, July 18th – Glorious Garlic Harvest – 9-2
Saturday, August 8th – Can You Dig It? #2 – Potato Harvest 10-2
Saturday, October 17th – Gratitude Gathering 1-6

Supplies:
We have made an extra effort to purchase all of the necessary supplies for the upcoming season. Due to the slowing down of supply chains, we wanted to ensure that we would not run short on any necessary supplies like potting mix, row covers, drip tape, etc. Due to the early purchase of your CSA share, we were able to do this.
Thank you for supporting our small farm!
