Here we go!

These past few months on the farm have been getting busier day by day. We start all of our own transplants and the first seeds are planted in early March. We have been re-potting and starting more seeds weekly. We are a bit limited on our space but once the weather warms up it makes our job so a bit easier. The great fluctuations in outdoor temperatures can make it a challenge to keep all of the little seedlings happy in our little seed starting house. We have been able to finally move some seedlings outside to harden off for our transplant-a-thon that will occur very soon. See the gallery below.

The first CSA shares are scheduled to be delivered next month! The deliveries will begin Tuesday, June 7th, and continue through Friday, October 28th.

Farm News: We have had quite the fluctuations with temperatures lately. We are hopeful that they are now going to stabilize and the below-freezing temps have passed. The muddy soil dried enough and Joe was finally able to get the tractor out in the field to till in the cover crop. The cover crop takes a few weeks to break down and adds organic matter into the soil. The new hoophouse that we built last season now has it’s plastic cover on. This project was very weather dependent and requires little to no wind during installation. The indeterminate tomatoes will go in this new house this season. They can grow quite tall, up to 8 ft. and need trellising. The garlic is coming up nicely. The new rhubarb patch is looking great. During these early months we use one of our hoophouses to hold the overflow of plants when it is still too cold to put them outside. We have now been able to move some of the cold hardy plants out on our “hardening off pallets”. With the break in the weather, Joe was also able to get the snow peas planted as well as hakurei turnip and radish. Our organic seed potatoes arrived yesterday and can go in the ground any day now.

The seedlings we have growing now are swiss chard (Sunset, Rainbow), onions (yellow, red), leeks, parsley, celeriac, mini-sweet peppers (red, yellow, orange), bell peppers (green, red, yellow), jalapeno pepper, eggplant (Japanese purple, black globe), tomatoes (Rose de Berne, Nepal, Arbason, Lola, Marmalade, Tasti Lee, Valentine grape, Plum Regal), a variety of head lettuces, basil, scallions, bok choy, summer squash (yellow, green zucchini), curly kale, Asian greens (Vivid Choy pac choy, white stemmed pac choy, Yukina savoy, Tokyo Bekana) and we continue to start more each week.

Joely & Joe – See you soon!
