April News – Earth Day

April – CSA News
WELCOME NEW & RETURNING CSA MEMBERS!! All is well on the farm! We have been busy over the past month. What a month of weather – warm sunshine and cold snow. Rest assured we are still on schedule. We are anticipating the CSA Shares to begin the fist full week of June with the first delivery on Tuesday, June 8th.

We started our first seeds on March 11th this season. A little later due to colder nighttime temperatures. Sometimes it is just better to wait a few days. The seeds that we have started so far are swiss chard, parsley, lettuce heads, celery, celeriac, onions, sweet bell peppers, jalapeno, mini-sweet peppers, eggplant, heirloom tomatoes, scallions, summer squash, slicing tomato, plum tomato, grape tomato, cherry tomato, kohlrabi, bok choy, leeks, beets, cantaloupe, and snow peas are sprouting in the field.

It was a challenge with our turbulent weather, but Joe managed to get most of the cover crop worked into the soil and direct seeded the snow peas in between the rain and snow. Once this cold snap is over, the field is ready for us to direct seed more crops. Soon we will also be able to transplant the heirloom tomatoes and peppers into the hoop houses. The swiss chard, scallions, onions, and potato will be transplanted in the field.

After the next few days of cold, we will begin our big repot of tomato, peppers, and eggplant. There are pallets of potting mix ready to go. We need to have room in the heated house for the bigger pots so we will move some of the hardier plants out of the heated hoop house. We have already moved the swiss chard and the onions. The parsley, celery, celeriac and lettuces will follow.

Projects – Start seeds. Relocate the rhubarb plot. Replace tines on the tiller. Rebuild our hardening off area. Prep the field and hoophouse for planting. Repot more seedling as we have room to do so.
