QUICK TIPS:  These are the same quick tips as last week – Just in case you missed them. When cooking greens, do not over cook. If possible add stems first, but you want the greens to just lightly wilt. They will get a brighter green.  Asian Greens -mild flavor – this week they are Tat Soi  (two varieties) & Bok Choy – raw in salad, stir fry, saute, soup; Hakurei turnip -mild – eat raw in salads/slaws, shredded, or cooked saute, stir fry, roasted. Have you ever had turnip burgers? We have a csa member (you know who you are) that loves these. She shared the recipe with us. We love them at our house too. Bok Choy – raw or cooked, excellent in salad and works well in smoothies. Rhubarb – so many optionstart, sweet or savory; excellent as sweetened sauce over ice cream, biscuits, or even savory with meat. Lettuce Mix and baby lettuce heads – save money and have control of your ingredients- make your own salad dressing -see the directory; I recommend sunflower oil- it does not solidify in the fridge and is mild in flavor.

If you didn’t make something last week with your rhubarb – now is your chance!! Rhubarb is not just for pie – Take a look at the vegetable directory for infinite possibilities. FARM NEWS: We would love some more sunshine to dry up these wet fields.

Did You Know??–  We do not use any pesticides or herbicides on our produce or fields. You can eat your produce at home with confidence that there are no residues of pesticide or herbicide. We use floating row covers to help minimize pest damage and rely on our lovely beneficial insects to help out. We also use them to deter the deer from munching along the way. Throughout the season we will share some photos of these warriors we see around the farm. Some of our favorites are lady bugs, assassin bugs, dragonflies, lacewings, soldier beetles, praying mantis to name a few.  Floating row covers are lightweight covering that are placed over the crop and we sometimes use hoops to hold them above the plants. You can see in this picture we use it quite a bit on our farm. These are held down with sand bags – sometimes a challenge with all of the wind around here.

long white strips in the back are the row covers

CROP BOX NOTE: Please remember to return your crop box weekly. if you forget your box-please take your share home in a bag. Paper bags are on had at your pick up. Lost and/or damaged crop boxes will incur a $20 fee.

Veggie Notes:  We do give your veggies a rinse at the farm – however we do recommend a second wash at home as necessary.  Decisions on rinsing is made at time of harvest and the effect it will have on your produce. Some items just store better unwashed. We do not use pesticides; therefore, it is possible that you find inhabitants in your produce. We try to restrict our plastic usage. The bags that you receive are recyclable at grocery store drop offs.

Thank you for supporting our small farm!!!
