Harvest possibilities for this week - July 28th - Week #8 The farm makes daily decisions for the share based on weather, harvest, etc. large share and small share items may differ Beans - Mix of yellow, green, purple; Haricot Vert - French filet green bean Fresh Garlic Potato - Purple Majesty or Fingerling (do not need peeling) Peppers Hot - Hungarian Hot Wax Pepper/ Jalapeno/ Serrano Cucumbers Eggplant - White / Black / Japanese (all varieties stay delicate; do not require peeling) Peppers - Bell / Italian Frying Tomato - Sunkist (solid orange) Heirloom Tomato - Purple Prudence / Cherokee Purple / Rose / Black Prince Cherry Tomato - Washington Cherry Summer Squash
Storage & Cooking Tips :
Tomato – Store on the counter – do not refrigerate (unless left over and you have to)- allow to ripen at home – heirloom and cherry
Tomato Sandwiches! One of our favorites. Use tomatoes in other vegetable dishes – sautéed, broiled, frittata, salads
cucumber and tomato cold salad….. cut up tomato and cucumber mix together in a bowl with an Italian vinaigrette or season yourself with vinegar and oil and salt and pepper. Store in the fridge – Refreshing on a hot day
You could even add other things like peppers, garlic, herbs…
Summer Squash – our summer squash plants have been slow going this season. We are guessing that they didn’t like all the rain when they were flowering. Please be patient they seem to be recovering. Varieties we have growing are: yellow straightneck, yellow scallopini, cousa (light green oblong), Zucchini -costata romanesco (Italian heirloom), 8 ball (you’ll know which on that is if they ever grow), Zucchini (dark green oblong)
Coming soon… beets, Heirloom Tomato – striped german, green zebra; sweet cherry tomatoes
