From the field

What a week of veggies! This weather has been incredible for this time of year. We did get some needed rain. The cover crops that Farmer Joe planted last week have germinated and are beginning to grow. This will grow into a lush blanket to protect our soil for the winter months. We have been busy working on the new High Tunnel and fall field clean-up. We harvested the butternut squash over the weekend, and we have some beauties to share with you.

The regular CSA season is coming to an end the last week of October. Our annual Gratitude Gathering is in just a few weeks. This is the final event on the farm for the season. We hope you can join us and your fellow CSA community members at the farm. We are very grateful for all of our CSA members. Many of you have become family to us. This was our 20th growing season, and we wouldn’t still be here without your support and investment in our farm.

Crops coming soon! Butternut Squash

Quick Tips:

We give most veggies a rinse at the farm. We do recommend that you wash again at home.

Broccoli – We do recommend soaking your broccoli to dislodge any pests. These are organic – no pesticides! Room temperature water with a good amount of salt or 1/3 cup white vinegar to 2 1/2 cups cold water. Submerge for 5 minutes, give it a swish and a rinse. You are mostly looking to dislodge cabbage worms. You can peel and use the stem for stir-fry, slaw, or soup

Acorn Squash -versatile winter squash with a mild, nutty, and slightly sweet flavor. Suitable for both sweet and savory dishes. It can be baked, roasted, pureed, or used as a vessel for stuffing. The skin is edible after cooking, which adds to its fiber content.

Bok Choy – raw or cooked – salads, soups, noodle dishes, steamed, grilled, stir-fried, or braised.

Komatsuna – raw or cooked – same a bok choy; stems take longer to cook so add them first just as you would bok choy; greens hold up well in soup

Mizuna – Japanese mustard greens; mild mustard, peppery flavor; salad, stir-fry, soups

Radish – raw or cooked – add to a stir-fry

Try an Asian themed salad with your favorite Spicy peanut ginger dressing

Green Tomato – We cleaned out the high tunnel; our intention was for you to use these green; fried green tomato or green tomato soup; you could try to let them ripen if you choose
