QUICK TIPS:  Be sure to take a look at the links for each veggie above. They take you to the vegetable directory.

Ideas for the week –  Wash your kale and bok choy at home when you are ready to use it. We have been loving curried veggies with coconut milk. This is a great week for Kale salad with peppers. When eating kale in a salad remove the stems (reserve for a stir fry) tear into bite-size pieces and massage the leaves to soften. They will become a darker green (your hands may too)  We also like greens and beans. Cook your greens lightly- don’t overcook. Pink Celery is back – remember it must be cooked!! Do not eat raw – not very palatable uncooked. You can use the tops as well.  This is considered an herb. I would imagine it could be frozen just as regular celery to be used in soups later.  I haven’t tried it yet. Red Cabbage – can be used raw or cooked. Store in the fridge cut off a piece and wrap in plastic to lengthen storage or peel off leaves as you use them. Bok Choy – can be eaten raw or cooked. Works great as a salad and in smoothies. Looks like once again we have a great stirfry box this week.  Watermelons – one of the trickiest items to harvest at the peak of ripeness. We always do our best – if we could cut each one open we would. This is the last week for melons. Summer Squash, Cucumbers and tomato are winding down. Peppers are still going strong.

Farm Update – We will begin to move from the crops of summer to fall varieties. The tomatoes in the field are over but we are still harvesting from the hoop-house. This is where we grow all of the heirlooms and cherry tomato. We have 3 varieties this season Rose, Rose de Berne, and Valencia. The first planting of corn is over, but the 2nd planting is looking great and should be ready soon. Onions are harvested and curing in the hoop house. The fall crops are coming along —-butternut!! Also coming soon-napa cabbage, watermelon radish, white and purple daikon, cabbage, broccoli, dinosaur kale, beets, and carrots. The 3rd planting of beans is ready this week. Here are a few pictures from around the farm this weekend so you can see what is happening.

Veggie Notes:  We do give your veggies a rinse at the farm – however, we do recommend a second wash at home as necessary.  Decisions on rinsing are made at the time of harvest and the effect it will have on your produce. Some items just store better unwashed. We do not use pesticides; therefore, it is possible that you find inhabitants in your produce. We try to restrict our plastic usage. The bags that you receive are recyclable at grocery store drop-offs.

Thank you for supporting our small farm!!!
