Hello CSA Members!

NEWS FROM THE FIELD

What a winter! It has been a challenge keeping our seedlings warm in our seed starting hoop house. Hopefully we are past the frigid temperatures and are moving into spring. The fields have finally thawed and are now extremely wet. We are hoping for some sunshine to begin drying them out. We are unable to work the soil until it has the correct moisture. If we attempt too early it will damage the soil structure.  The cover crops are growing nicely with this rain and will help to improve the soil humus, organic matter, and nutrients when it gets worked into the soil. Patience is difficult at this time. We are writing this as the rain pours outside. Oh, let us change that to SNOWING!
We received the truck delivery of our Organic Compost from VermiGreen and Organic Seed Potatoes from The Maine Potato Lady. Our Organic Sweet Potato slips are on order from Deep Grass Nursery.
The seedlings growing in the seedling hoop house now are:
Leeks, Onions, Scallions, Heirloom Tomatoes, Cherry Tomatoes, Sweet Peppers, Hot Peppers, Herbs (Cilantro, Parsley, Thyme, Rosemary, Cutting Celery, Fennel Leaf, Marjoram, Oregano), Celery, Celeriac, Swiss Chard, Eggplant, Tomatillo, Broccoli Raab, and Lettuce with others starting soon
First seeds to go directly into the field as soon as possible:
Peas, Spinach, Baby Swiss Chard, Baby Kale, Radish, Beet Greens, Lettuce (Mix & Heads), Arugula, Turnips, Carrots,
Potato varieties this season- Fingerling, Purple Majesty, Mountain Rose, Yukon Gold, Dark Red Norland, German Butterball, Kennebec, Adirondack Blue (new variety trial)
In the field, the garlic is coming up and the rhubarb is off to a good start.
Our new flock of laying hens are now in full swing and will have plenty of eggs available at CSA pick up time.
